Medical Care in Paphos

Countless people move to Cyprus each year – and while there are several reasons why so many individuals choose to relocate to this island, the healthcare system here alone is one huge advantage.

Those moving to Paphos are likely to find that there are a number of great medical centres available; from Harbour Medical, to the Paphos Laser Medical Center.

Healthcare in Cyprus

The system in place is divided into two sectors; public and private. Generally, public healthcare is free (or at the least, inexpensive) for EU citizens – and even if you’d rather get private healthcare, there’s a good chance that you’ll find it to be quite affordable.

There are also plenty of medical centres and hospitals (both state-funded and private) to be found in all the island’s major cities; including those that specialise in specific ailments, treatments and procedures.

Most doctors and specialists will know a good deal of English, since most are trained overseas and have been dealing with English-speaking patients for a number of years. If at any time there is a language barrier, notes can be taken and translated at a later date, or on-site by another professional in the hospital/surgery.

What is GESY?

The new healthcare system of Cyprus started on the 1st of June 2019 – and this full-coverage program for all citizens has made quite a difference in a short amount of time. While Cyprus’ healthcare was already known for being great, GESY has only made it better.

The new system gives people a choice between the services of any healthcare professional in the public or private sector – and since the Health Insurance Organization pay for all medical and pharmaceutical expenses, most individuals can choose either regardless of their financial situation or status.

With this system in place, citizens are able to take advantage of the health services they need no matter what the cost – and all it takes is for everyone to contribute a small amount of their monthly income to help fund the operation (with the majority of individuals only having to give 2.65% of their overall wages).
