Monuments To Visit In Paphos - Cyprus

It’s no secret that many tourists come to Cyprus for the classic resort holiday (and who wouldn’t, with plenty of beaches and great summer weather), but there is so much more to see and do on this historical island than splash in the sea and soak up some rays. One of the most popular destinations to visit is Paphos, so if you’re planning a holiday here, what monuments should you aim to add to your itinerary?

The most popular historical sites

You will find a range of unique archaeological sites in Cyprus that are as rich in history as they are stunning. Some of the main attractions in Kato Paphos you are likely to have heard of, but there are some hidden gems to be found along the way, too.

Tombs of the Kings

As one of the most well-known spots in Paphos, the name speaks for itself. A UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 4th century BC, you won’t be surprised to find underground tombs that were carved straight out of the rock to create burial chambers that were fit for a king. Having said that, each chamber was more likely to have been used for those of power or considerable wealth (and not necessarily royalty), sometime between the Greek and Roman eras.

You will find a range of architectural points of interest throughout the seven tombs that are here – although tomb three is considered to be the most worthwhile to visit in terms of features.

Paphos Mosaics

There are a range of beautifully preserved mosaics to visit in the Paphos district – and you’ll find them at the House of Dionysus, the House of Aion and the House of Theseus (luckily, these are within walking distance of each other).

Each site has its own main attraction, with scenes from Greek mythology artfully portrayed in vibrant colours, from naturally sourced limestone. If you would like to see ancient depictions of a chariot carrying Dionysus drawn by leopards, a beauty contest judged by Aion himself, or even of Theseus’ battle with the Minotaur; look no further.

Paphos Ruins

There are more than a few sites worth visiting throughout Paphos and the ruins of both Hrysopolitissa Basilica and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite are among the best.

The former is considered to be one of the most comprehensive Byzantine ruins on the Island (Hrysopolitissa was once the largest basilica), featuring mosaics, columns, St Paul’s Pillar and the prevailing Ayia Kyriaki Church. The latter ruins hail from 12th century BC and are home to an array of chambers, courtyards and possibly even a temple; all constructed, reconstructed and destroyed at various points in history. There are a plethora of ruins of Roman houses to be seen here too, so you’re sure not to be disappointed.

Where to visit near Paphos

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of central Paphos on your visit, but still want to enjoy some history and culture, the following attractions could be ideal.

Fyti Village

This traditional village, that sits just 26 km northeast of Paphos, is somewhere to immerse yourself when you want to experience days gone by. With country vistas, cobblestone alleys, stone houses and even a quaint Folk Art museum to peruse at your leisure, you really will feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

The Akamas Peninsula

For those who are looking for a wilder, more natural experience for their holiday, this Peninsula is 44 km north of Paphos and is perfect for hiking. With some of the richest native flora and fauna on the Island (with a range of plant species only found right here in Cyprus), you’re sure to reconnect with nature and find something you haven’t seen before.

The trails are well established, so even those with little to no experience in hiking can make the most of the area. You can visit the Baths of Aphrodite and the ruins of the monastery of Pyrgos tis Rigainas on your walk, as well as much more.
