Paphos Ancient Odeon

Paphos Ancient Odeon

While the Paphos Odeon may host a number of different cultural events, it’s become one of the most important archaeological sites in Kato Paphos. Located in the centre of the tourist area in the town of Nea Paphos, it’s not hard to see why this monument is such a popular place to visit among holiday makers in Cyprus.

Facts about the Paphos Odeon - Cyprus

There is so much that makes the Paphos Odeon the magnificent site it is today. For example, it was one of the Roman Agora buildings, which means that it dates all the way back to the 2nd century A.D. However, you can still enjoy events at the site today, thanks to the fact that the Paphos Ancient Odeon has been restored by the Department of Antiquities and is frequently maintained, too.

Nea Paphos

Nea Paphos is located on the southwest coast of the island and, according to written sources, it was discovered by the last king of Palaepaphos Nicocles towards the end of the 4th century B.C. The town had become the centre of the Ptolemaic administration in Cyprus, when the island was titled as a part of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Nea Paphos became the economical and political centre of the region; which is why it was made the capital of Cyprus.

It remained the capital of the island during the time when Cyprus was annexed by Rome and stayed this way up until earthquakes rocked the area during 4th century A.D. Even when the capital was transferred to Salamis, it still kept its status as an important location.

With the town’s rich history, it’s no wonder that it was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1980. However, excavations had started in the early 1960s by the Department of Antiquities – which is when many of the ancient buildings were discovered.

There are various reasons why a tourist may want to take a trip to Nea Paphos – whether they’re interested in the history of the location or want to see one of the events that are hosted at the Paphos Odeon now that the site has been restored.

Walking alongside this incredible architecture is certainly a memorable event. Still being able to touch the ancient stone used in its construction can almost take you back to a time before planes, cars and electricity, to a simpler era where entertainment was up close and personal.
