What To Do In Paphos Harbour

Paphos is an ancient city with plenty of attractions and locations of interest. Whether you want to check out the birthplace of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite, or eat some delicious local dishes in one of the many great restaurants here; there’s likely to be something for you to enjoy in this part of Cyprus. Many people stop by because of the rich history here, as there are many ancient artefacts from the Classical, Greek and Roman times to be found.

If you’re planning on visiting the Paphos Harbour area, there are certainly a number of things that you’ll want to add to your to-do-list, such as:

Explore Kato Paphos

While there’s plenty to enjoy in Cyprus on the whole, if you want to see one of the island’s best archaeological parks, this is the place to be. If you’re interested in seeing artefacts and sites from many, many years ago, the Kato Paphos archaeological park is a must-visit.

Here, you’ll find several amazing pieces of history; including the ancient Odeon, the ruins of Limeniotissa (an early Christian Basilica Church), Asklipieon and much more. There are also the remains of 4 roman villas for you to check out too, as well as Saranta Kolones (meaning forty columns in English) – the ruins of an ancient castle.

This isn’t everything Kato Paphos has to offer either, so be sure to pay this stunning location a visit next time you’re looking for a unique historical experience.

See the Castle of Paphos

There are many amazing landmarks located across the island, but none can deny that the Castle of Paphos is one of the most famous sites in this city.

Once, this structure was a Byzantine fort, built to protect the harbour. Unfortunately though, it was destroyed by a powerful earthquake. During the 13th century, it was rebuilt into a castle by the Lusignans – and since then, it has seen quite a few more reconstructions take place. At one point, it was even used as a prison! Today, it’s a popular landmark and a background for the annual Paphos cultural festival.

Visit the Panagia Chrysopolitissa Church

This church is truly an amazing example of an archaeological and religious site. It’s a wonderful piece of Greek orthodox history and has been beautifully restored. Regardless of whether or not you follow this religion, you’re sure to be able to admire the amazing landmark in all its glory.

Check out the Tombs of the Kings

While the Tombs of the Kings is located in Kato Paphos, it’s such an interesting site that it deserves a little explanation of its own. This is one of the most important archaeological sites on the Island, and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980.

Dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, this site hosts a number of underground tombs that are carved out of solid rock.
