Visiting Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
Known for being one of the most important ancient sites on the island, the archaeological park of Kato Paphos is a must visit for anyone staying in this part of Cyprus. The fact that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site alone is impressive (thanks to its outstanding universal value), but there are quite a few other reasons why it’s such a popular tourist destination.
What has been found at the Archaeological Park so far?
There may be many historic and ancient sites to be discovered in Cyprus, but many consider this to be one of the most magnificent. The main reason why it’s treated with such regard is because of the great monuments and artefacts that have been excavated; ranging from pre-historic items, all the way to treasures from the Middle Ages.
A few of the most impressive things that have been discovered so far are 4 Roman-period villas, each with stunning mosaics. Each has scenes from Greek mythology and an incredible amount of craftsmanship – and this is why these mosaics are often hailed as some of the greatest in the world.
This isn’t all that has been found at the Archaeological Park, though. For example, there’s the sanctuary dedicated to Asklepeios, the ancient god of medicine, that dates as far back to 200 years B.C. to 300 years A.C – which most would agree is rather impressive.
Those who visit the park may also want to see the Saranta Kolones; a castle from the Byzantine period dating back to 7th century A.C. Unfortunately, in 1223 A.C, it was destroyed by an earthquake.
Yearly Excavations
There are still excavations on the site – in fact, the Cyprus Antiquities Department and Archaeology departments of universities around the globe excavate here every year, so who knows what might be discovered next?
